Welcome to an Exciting Marketing Career!

Individual Development

Professional Affiliations

UNO AMA Collegiate Chapter

The UNO Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association has been one of the most active, and most recognized student organizations on campus. It has won awards and recognition at the College, University and National levels over the past five years. Every marketing student should be a member! Join it and get involved in building your career skills!

Contact Dr. Russell Lacey, Advisor, Room KH 332, Extension 6483 for more information. Membership is open to all majors. Dues are $60 per year ($30 National dues and $30 local Student Chapter dues). Bimonthly luncheon meetings are held at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Business Community Interaction

The American Marketing Association is a professional association of individuals from business, government, and academic organizations. The purpose of the association is to stimulate more professionalism, sophisticated decision making, and theory in the field of marketing. In addition to the national association, the New Orleans AMA Chapter welcomes your attendance at their luncheon meetings on the first Thursday of each month. You should check with Professor Fisk for more details.

Also, the local chapters of other marketing associations (Louisiana Direct Marketing Association, Louisiana Public Relations Association, International Association of Business Communicators, New Orleans Ad Club, Public Relations Society of America, and Sales and Marketing Executives) welcome the attendance of marketing students.

Work Experience

The ultimate goal of learning about marketing is to practice marketing later in a career. You are encouraged to seek marketing related employment during the summer or part-time to complement your academic work. Any work experience helps in developing your personal and professional goals. However, work experiences in marketing will be much more helpful in launching your marketing career after graduation. A marketing internship is a great way to earn academic credit while acquiring practical experience.

Professional Periodicals

There are a variety of professional publications that are of interest to marketers. In order to make the most use of these trade publications, you must discipline yourself to read them regularly, with particular attention to articles in your specific area of interest. The following are examples of periodicals that are directly related to business and marketing:

Advertising Age
American Demographics
Business Ethics
Business Week
Direct Marketing
Forbes
Fortune
Harvard Business Review
Inc.
Marketing Management
New Orleans City Business
Sales and Marketing Management
Venture
Wall Street Journal

The above are all available in the university library. Also, many of these same publications can be found on the Internet. At least two or three should fit your field of interest. Begin the habit now of reading in your field. Your course work will be more interesting, your ideas will be fresher, and your interaction with prospective employers will be sharper.

Other Activities

Many nonbusiness organizations have marketing-related tasks. Volunteer for activities which will further your business experience: act as treasurer, head a promotions committee, organize a fund-raiser or special function. Let your involvement help you grow professionally.

Graduate Studies

The MBA program provides graduate professional education for individuals who want to prepare for administrative careers in business as well as the public sector. In the graduate studies, you expand your knowledge in the areas of accounting, finance, management, and marketing and develop analytical and research capabilities through research design and computer-based decision courses. Flexibility is provided by allowing the selection of elective course work to enhance achievement of personal career goals.

The MBA student may choose to continue broad managerial development through course work in a variety of graduate functional areas and analytical tool courses, or to concentrate studies in a particular area such as finance, marketing, management, or management science.

The MBA program is an excellent way to further your background in marketing. Given the dynamic and sophisticated nature of business today, the MBA student is highly sought after by employers. The general requirements of the undergraduate marketing curriculum provide the typical prerequisites for entry into an MBA program. Consult with one of the marketing faculty if you are interested in enhancing your career opportunities with an MBA degree.
