How
do you know if the Executive MSHCM program is right for
you?
The
UNO Executive MSHCM
The
focus of this program is management within the health care
industry, which can include hospital administration, department
management and practice management, among other career paths.
It is a business master's in which the traditional business
functions are used to analyze situations within a health
care setting. The primary goal of this program is to teach
health care professionals graduate-level business applications
and expand their professional development.
By
comparison, a master of public health and a master of health
administration may incorporate or may be dominated by business
courses, but those degrees are not granted by business schools.
The University of New Orleans, which is accredited by the
Southern Association of Colleges and School, has the only
program in the state offered through an AACSB
(Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business)
accredited business school.

MSHCM
vs. MBA
The
difference between a Master of Science in Health Care
Management (MSHCM
or EMSHCM) and a Master of Business Administration
(MBA
or EMBA)
is that the MSHCM teaches functional areas of business
with a focus on the management of business operations
within the health care industry, whereas, the MBA
has greater depth within certain subject areas and
is considered more of a generalist degree. Entrepreneurs
and administrators of large organizations may want
to consider the MBA program as an option.
One
of the most important aspects of the Executive MSHCM
is the team focus. Students are formed into small
work groups, which remain together for the entire
program. The small-group format is important to students
since they provide important social and academic support
for their members. The groups are also important fail-safe
devices for busy managers whose workloads fluctuate
widely. Group members will constantly "trade
off" their strengths and weaknesses. Because
of the interdependence on team members, students are
encouraged to be certain of their commitment to earning
a master's through this intensive program.
