EMBA Curriculum Course Descriptions
Small Group Management
This course provides an experiential introduction to the dynamics of small group interaction and management. Students utilize self-assessment exercises designed to highlight individual differences and group exercises structured to develop students' abilities to work together in groups. Students will select a work group that will be maintained throughout the EMBA program.
Organizational Behavior, Leadership and Communications
Emphasizing policy level decision-making, this course is a combination of traditional organizational behavior, operations management and communications. It provides professionals with the tools necessary to analyze and design organizations, structure information flows, develop communications systems, and motivate and lead the organization.
Business Communications
This course provides the skills and tools necessary for effective business communications. Written communications as well as oral presentations are discussed. Topics include grammar, sentence and paragraph structure, business report formats, presentation skills, and an introduction to the use of Microsoft
PowerPoint presentation software.
Financial and Managerial Accounting
An intensive analysis of the accounting and control functions in organizations, these courses integrate basic skills training with advanced applications. Emphasis is placed on the use of accounting information for decision-making.
Managerial Economics
Economic theory and methods are taught in this course as the basis for understanding industries and business enterprises. It is designed to develop a level of comfort among executive students in the appropriate use of economic concepts and tools in a managerial decision-making process. Topics include
supply and demand estimation, production techniques, cost and quality determinations and pricing strategy relevant to different industries across market structures.
Quantitative Methods
Designed to provide experienced managers and professionals with the quantitative skills needed to analyze and solve business problems, this course provides a foundation in basic skills as well as advanced applications. Topics include linear programming, integer programming and goal programming; transportation and assignment models; network models, inventory models, and queuing theory; theories and techniques for modeling uncertainty.
Survey of Decision Making Tools
A variety of decision-making tools are introduced in this course to develop and apply the skills that were learned in the Quantitative Methods class. Emphasis is on applying basic analytical, quantitative, and qualitative tools in the decision-making process.
Marketing Management
In this class, an intensive investigation of marketing strategy and tactics is launched in relation to an organization's environmental characteristics. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and developing clear strategies and internally consistent marketing plans. Basic marketing principles and
quantitative analysis are integrated with advanced marketing applications through the case study method.
Operations Management/Management Information Systems
This course introduces an executive-level analysis of the major issues in the planning and management of product and service quality, production and delivery of product and service quality, production and delivery of product or service, and the management of information resources. Leading edge
methods and established procedures are discussed in the context of policy level decision-making in a dynamic global environment.
Financial Management
Relating accounting and economic fundamentals with topics in financial management, this course provides executive students with the knowledge and skills they need to understand the financial function of organizations. Class discussions place an emphasis on financial applications and problem solving in the manager's decision-making process. Because students must approach the case studies with a strong background in quantitative analysis, this course has been placed at the end of the program.
Applications of Business Analysis
The capstone of the EMBA program, this course takes an integrative view of the total strategic planning and implementation process. Discussions and case studies encourage the development of cross-functional conceptual and analytical skills. Topics include: environmental and competitive analysis; strategy,
structure and control in organizations; strategic leadership; entrepreneurship and innovation. Applying skills developed throughout the EMBA program, students will create and formally present a comprehensive report based on an in-depth study of one organization.
International Business
For the final course, students will study the international aspects of business. New Orleans' studentswill have the option of taking a portion of the course in
New Orleans or through an international trip. Jamaica students will have the option of taking the entire course in Kingston or one half of the course through an international study tour.
